Festival Outlaws

Well another year has passed here in the dirty stalls of IBWIP. In this special extended addition of IBWIP we have a ton of great music and special guests to help us celebrate our 50th episode. Amish BJ takes his normal seat as Blake’s right hand man but really did a lot of extra stuff to make this episode special and I want to give a big shout out to him and thank him right off the bat. During the show we also have some awesome people sit down with us and share the mic. Sean Phillips from What Would Sean Do, Jashie P from Outlaw Radio Chicago and Last False Hope, as well as a very special sit in by the one and only Uncle Bubba. Yes, folks that is right, Uncle Bubba is back and him and Amish B.J really kick Blake’s ass throughout the show! We were also honored to have Professor KAK come in and give us an educated look at IBWIP and it’s effect on modern culture. This segment with Professor KAK actually lead to the name of the episode being changed to it’s current title “4 Years of Making People Poo”.
To even begin to describe what all is in EP50 would take way too long to type (and I am one lazy S.O.B). It would also ruin all the surprises! We can tell you though that The Christy Boys make an appearance; Uncle Bubba, Amish BJ, and Blake become prophets; Sean tells us why his job kicks ass; and Jashie P gives us some breaking news! We also give listeners all the details on Cocker’s cousin Peter and how to have him come to visit your town!
Put what matters the most (as it always has for 4 long years) is the music and we play a ton of it. More songs than I think that we have ever played on an episode of IBWIP. We spin new music from Slackeye Slim, Curst Sons, Rachel Brooke, The Honky Tonk Hustlas. Along with songs from The Blind Staggers, Whiskey Clan, The Wild Boars, The Glass Child, Old Sleeper, Those Darlins, Possessed by Paul James, and Aran Buzzas. I mean seriously folks, if we played anymore music you’d have to punch your dog!
So thank you to all our new listeners as well as our long time faithful followers. Without you guys (and three girls) we wouldn’t keep coming back to bring you the gospel. All we ask is that you enjoy the banter, the music, and tell at least 10 friends about the new episode. We bring the music to the masses and hope in return you’ll bring us into the ears of your friends, relatives, and life partners. Thank you again for being such awesome fans but more importantly the most kick ass extended family that we could ever ask for! See yall in July.
Also don’t forget to head over to Jashie P’s new label Solitary Records

Those Poor Bastards have a unique, dark country sound, labeled as “Gothic Country.” Members are “Lonesome Wyatt” and “The Minister”, so you’ll definitely want to check him out if you haven’t heard his music. They wrote the popular Hank III song “pills I took”, amongst with many other great songs. I personally have only three of their albums and wish I had the others, I’ve been listening to Those Poor Bastards for over five years now and they keep getting better each album! I got a chance to meet Wyatt a few years back, got to see him live and loved his shows. Also I’d like to say the sound quality and the overall production of his CDs are hell of good, even down to the design of the CD Cover. They continue to keep it us as well, great job guys. So check them out, visit his site, at http://www.thosepoorbastards.com and click here to like him on Facebook as well: Those Poor Bastards.

REMEMBER, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL OUTLAWS!!!!

A word from HANK III on “Those Poor Bastards” …………….

“Those Poor Bastards Are the best Gothic Country I have heard yet to this day. The depressing gloomy vocals coming out of this drifter named Lonesome Wyatt has hints of Marilyn Manson to Nick Cave, Throwrag and maybe even a hint of a demented Adam Ant with a shot of a Pilled Up Johnny Cash… And the Minister is backing up Lonesome Wyatt with a style that is a cross between eerie strung out folk music with a creepy blend of The Nightmare Before Christmas!!!!!!!!!” -Hank Williams III

Rachel Brooke. You NEED to check her out. Here’s a little article about her from our good friends at savingcountrymusic.com Also check website out at: http://www.rachelbrookemusic.com

Like so many of us, Rachel Brooke was born in the wrong time. Her classic style, and her simple and poetic songs fit much more snugly in an oval picture frame of tarnished metal and smoky glass than on CMT or Clear Channel pop country. She might be from Michigan, but this girl must have been touched with the songs and sentiments of the southlands and the weary West at birth.

The Rachel Brooke brand of old school country soul is true, and doesn’t even give a hint of fake, stereotyped molding to fit a style or genre that happens to be hip at the time. It flows out of her as true and vital as breath. In other words, this girl is the REAL DEAL!

Her songs have that capacity to take you somewhere you haven’t been for many many years, or to take you somewhere you want to be: in the depths of drunkenness and depression, or back home where all was right. Then she feeds it all through the effects of a warped record or an fuzzy AM radio to erase any tinges left behind by this modern antiseptic world with its polished existence, because the songs are not meant for this modern world or the people who dwell in it. They are meant for YOU,..the wayward soul rambling down the Lost Highway.”

One-man band Slate Dump coming to the V Club

January 26, 2011 @ 11:25 PM

NICK HARRAH

For The Herald-Dispatch

Talking to Jason Sells over the phone, you get the sense that he has an old soul.

The 33-year old Beckley native and Memphis, Tenn., resident’s humble Raleigh County roots come through loud and clear.

“I don’t care to talk about myself, honestly,” Sells said from Memphis as he ferried Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Jam Messengers (Rob K and Uncle Butcher) about, sightseeing during a few days off on their U.S. tour, which Sells (also known as Slate Dump) jumped on.

The tour brings Sells and The Jam Messengers to The V Club, 741 6th Ave., Friday, Jan. 28.

“I’m going to show them around Memphis,” Sells said. “We’re going to hit Graceland, Sun Studios, visit some graveyards, record stores and Beale Street. When we get to West Virginia, Marco (Butcher) is a big Hasil Adkins fan, and we plan on going to go clean Hasil’s grave and maybe lay some hot dogs down in his honor. We’ll maybe see if my buddy Jesco’s home, see if he wants to tag along.”

While Jesco White’s family calls Sells “nephew,” they’re not really related, just good friends.

“People ask me if I’m his nephew, but I’m not, in actuality. He’s been a close friend for over 10 years; I’ve taken him to the store, the post office, I took him to get his I.D. made at the Kanawha Mall,” Sells said laughing.

Sells, playing out as the minimalist, bluesy, roots-based Slate Dump for about five years, described how he got introduced to these Brazilian acts.

“About four or five years ago, a good friend of mine and another one-man band, J Marinelli, gave me the “Attack of the One Man Bands” compilation CD,” he said. “He told me about guys like Chuck Violence, Chucrobillyman, Fabulous GoGo Boy from Alabama, and Uncle Butcher, of course. And I just fell in love. They’re doing cooler things than a lot of Americans right now. I kept in touch and told them if they were ever in America I’d be glad to try to set them up some shows.”

For Sells, even though he’s in Memphis, after calling Morgantown home for a few years, his musical roots lie in Raleigh County.

“Raleigh Hollow, growing up on McQuillen hill,” Sells said. “My great-grandfather, Hughie McQuillen, had 11 kids, and during the depression he worked in the mines and played stringed instruments in bars at night, and was able to support all of his kids. I learned all my rudimentary chords from him and my grandmother, Doris McQuillen-Bennett. She’s 73-years old and still plays guitar. She loves Chuck Berry, Bill Withers; my grandmother is rockin’. Yeah, I learned the only four chords I know from them,” Sells said laughing.

There was also inspiration from other sources.

“My mom and my biological father used to take me to blues and folk festivals and let me run around naked, that had something to do with it,” Sells said. “Her record collection had a big influence on me, too. My stepfather introduced me to the Ramones, the Kinks and Butthole Surfers, which really warped my brain.”

After playing in a few bands as a teenager in and around Raleigh and Fayette counties, Sells kicked off his career as Slate Dump with more help from his grandmother.

“It wasn’t until 2005, I picked up my grandmother’s 1960 model Gibson, and the songs started comin’. In about a 48-hour period I wrote five or six good songs and I didn’t even know what to do with them.”

After a tough period “couch surfing” in Morgantown “living on Ramen,” Sells has found happiness in Memphis with his fiancé, Marly Hazen, who he met while she was studying at WVU. Hazen penned the lyrics for one of Sells’ songs on his most recent release, 2010′s “Electric Punching Machine.”

“Yeah, she wrote the lyrics for “Collarbone,” which has been requested pretty much everywhere I play. It’s one of my favorite songs to play.”

Sells said he can’t wait to bring The Jam Messengers through Huntington and Morgantown.

“The college towns should love these guys,” he said. “They’re everything; glam, trash, punk and blues, and raw. They’re the kick in the (butt) that America has been needing for a while. I hope to continue bringing in this Brazilian influx, because we need the rhythms. We need to get back to the roots. I flip on the radio here in Memphis and there’s no blues or roots stations. One station will play blues from 9:30 to midnight. There’s rap, pop crap and top 20 country. But the Jam Messengers are going to kick all that in the (butt), I can promise you that.”

TRAFALGER WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT!

Posted by: admin   in Blog, Film

There are so many faces in this film it should be a sin that it’s not available yet, there is a line going for miles to see this film, it’s had some delays getting finished but will blow you away once released. There are literally too many starts to list, this black & white, tongue-in-cheek, sci-fi monster movies of the 1950′s film isn’t even finished and is already being deemed a cult classic, no footage has been leaked, only promo photos that are all over the net, from Gunnar Hansen (star of  The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) to musician Hank III and Jesco “the Dancing Outlaw” White, this is one hell of a cast, and will be a hell of a film!

Here is a exert from Scott Foy at badmovies.net

IT CAME FROM TRAFALGAR

First came The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and now comes yet another black & white, tongue-in-cheek homage to the sci-fi monster movies of the 1950′s called It Came From Trafalgar. Is that a trend I’m smelling or what?

First-time writer/director/producer Solomon Mortamur not only has a name that was seemingly meant to be seen in the opening credits of an old sci-fi monster movie, even the lengths to which he went to bring his vision to life sounds like the kind of thing a truly determined filmmaker of old would have done. The man behind this Indiana based b-movie tribute spent the past several years doing construction work, cleaning people’s homes, and emptying dumpsters just to scrape together the $100,000 needed for production costs. How many novice filmmakers can say they have a production studio next to their mobile home? Despite having no connections to the entertainment industry, a little local publicity and the luck of getting veteran scream queen Linnea Quigley to join the cast touched off a series of events that lead to his little homegrown Atomic Age monster movie spoof getting a roll call of b-movie veterans that would make most low budget genre movie directors drool. Or at the very least make their mouths a bit moister than usual. Just check out this all-star cast.

  • Scream Queen Linnea Quigley of Return of the Living Dead, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama fame.
  • Former “Leatherface” Gunnar Hansen.
  • Edwin Neal, the crazed hitchhiker from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre turned anime voice actor.
  • Scream Queen Brinke Stevens of too many movies to possibly even try and list here.
  • Bill Hinzmann, best remembered as the cemetery zombie from the opening of the original Night of the Living Dead.
  • Butch “Eddie Munster” Patrick
  • Dolemite himself Rudy Ray Moore
  • J.P. Richardson, son of the late 50’s rocker The Big Bopper.
  • Musician Hank Williams III
  • Actor/stuntman Jim O’Rear, whose website features photos from the film including a hilarious pic of the aliens themselves. (http://members.aol.com/sarcophagi/trafalgar.html)
  • Conrad Brooks, a regular of numerous Ed Wood movies including the king of the bad movies Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I’m actually shocked not to see the names Eddie Deezen, Debbie Rochon, Julie Strain, or Richard Gabai listed in the credits along with everyone else in this one.

As for the film’s plot, It Came From Trafalgar deals with a UFO crashing in Trafalgar, Indiana back in the 1960’s that leads to a madcap alien invasion 40 years by goofy looking bulb-headed creatures called Zongolians. Plus there’s stuff that somehow ties into the JFK assassination, Marilyn Monroe’s illegitimate daughter, and a wide variety of other popular conspiracy theories. Quoting Mr. Mortamur, “In the movie, Trafalgar represents kind of a new Roswell, New Mexico. There’s a nameless graveyard in Trafalgar, and it contains all the secrets that the United States is hiding from the world.”

Mortamur plans to have the movie ready for a spring 2005 release. Despite numerous offers already from those looking to distribute the movie, he is determined to keep to his independent filmmaking root by selling the movie exclusively through the official website www.itcamefromtrafalgar.com, which currently has absolutely nothing at this time. Literally, there’s nothing there but a domain name. Still, Mortamur plans to sell the movie through the site for only $20, vowing to drop the price to $5 a couple of years after the film’s release. The first of a series of three CD soundtracks tied into the movie is set to go on sale through the site in about two months so I can only assume there will actually be a site there two months from now.

One thing’s for certain, even if It Came From Trafalgar proves to be a dismal failure on every level it’s still guaranteed to be one hell of a failure.

One things for sure, people are waiting, and it will be worth the wait.

If you haven’t had the chance to meet this man, you better get your ass moving!! This kick ass, hell-bent, blues blaring, One Man Band,  Hell Raiser knows how to get your blood pumping, sometimes even using a Mega Phone to EAT YOUR FACE with PURE AWESOME-NESS!!!

“Rock ‘n’ Roll ain’t pretty and neither is Scott H. Biram. The self proclaimed ‘Dirty Old One Man Band’ successfully, and sometimes violently, lashes together blues, hillbilly and country precariously to raucous punk and godless metal.

Biram ain’t no candy-ass singer/songwriter either, sweetly strumming songs about girls with big eyes and dusty highways. HELL NO!!! His singing, yodeling, growling, leering and brash preachin’ and hollerin’ is accompanied by sloppy riffs and licks from his 1959 Gibson guitar and pounding backbeat brought forth by his amplified left foot. The remainder of this one-man band consists of an unwieldy combination of beat-up amplifiers and old microphones strung together by a tangled mess of guitar cables.

Years of non-stop touring have honed his assault to a fine edge; his wide-eyed throw downs in the First Church of Ultimate Fanaticism routinely lead giddy followers to a fiery baptism.

Scott H. Biram won’t die. On May 11th, 2003, one month after being hit head-on by an 18-wheeler at 75 MPH, he took the stage at The Continental Club in Austin, TX in a wheel chair – I.V. still dangling from his arm. With 2 broken legs, a broken foot, a broken arm and 1 foot less of his lower intestine, Biram unleashed his trademark musical wrath.

When Scott H. Biram took the stage at his 2004 SXSW festival showcase right after Kris Kristofferson he was quoted as growling “They said that was a hard act to follow….I’m a hard act to follow motherfuckers!!” The stunned crowd looked on.”

Jesco White was first profiled on the Public Broadcasting Service’s “Different Drummer” Series. Because of his popularity, PBS eventually released two documentaries about Jesco. The first was “Dancing Outlaw” (1991), directed by Jacob Young, which featured him at home in West Virginia and gave audiences a glimpse into his troubled life.

As the popularity of Dancing Outlaw grew, he was asked by comedian Tom Arnold to perform on the television show Roseanne. He traveled to Los Angeles for the performance, which was chronicled in the 1994 short film Dancing Outlaw 2: Jesco Goes To Hollywood – directed by Jacob Young.

A new documentary film about White and his family, produced by Johnny Knoxville, titled The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia was screened at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. Also see MTV Producers Bond Jesco Out of Jail.

He played himself in an upcoming film called It Came from Trafalgar (2011), written and directed by Solomon Mortamur. This film also stars a Hank III, along with a list of stars from cult classic horror films.

A film inspired by his life, entitled White Lightnin’, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. The film was written by Vice Magazine creators Eddy Moretti and Shane Smith, and was directed by Dominic Murphy.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia (2009)WATCH TRAILER

Storyline

Shoot-outs, robberies, gas-huffing , drug dealing, pill popping, murders, and tap dancing – what do these all have in common? These are just a few of the parts of being a member of the Wild and Wonderful White Family. The legendary family is as known for their wild, excessive criminal ways as they are for their famous mountain dancing members, including Jesco White, the star of the cult classic documentary “Dancing Outlaw.” Exploring both the comic and tragic sides of life on the other side of the law, this stylish, fast-paced family portrait exposes the powerful forces of corruption, poverty, and West Virginia’s environmentally and culturally devastating coal mining culture that helped shape the White family, a dying breed of outlaws preserving a dying form of dance. TRY SOME ALLCORN PANCAKES

Posted by: admin   in Blog, Video

Turn back the pages of time and watch this hilarious Joey Allcorn, “Aunt Jemima” Pancake Commercial. This is spoof taken from an radio advertisement that originally Hank Williams Senior had played on the “Aunt Jemima Pancake Show” in June 1951 . Which you can download the original radio show here.

HOW THE VIDEO CAME ABOUT: Joey was on tour in August 2007, where he was playing at UNKL RAYS in Hinton, WV.  It was a great night of music with guest Slackeye Slim who opened up for Joey Allcorn. (If you want, you can check out the photos from that night on the FESTIVAL OUTLAWS Facebook Page.) They traveled through several parts of West Virginia with the help of “theNephew” to show them around to various places, went to Boone County, Joey paid his respects to Hasil Adkin’s grave site. Also went on Hank’s Last stop in Oak Hill, WV. (These photos are also included in the FESTIVAL OUTLAWS Facebook Page.) Driving around we were listening to the original Radio AD and we all came up with the idea to make the video spoof, so after a long day’s trip we ended up in Beckley where Jole Aron filmed and edited the video overnight which became very popular video online.
